Part A) Design & Fabrication 《A部分)设计与制造》

In this activity, we will build a prototype mini-jet model that will be used in our upcoming experiment. While each person will be responsible for making their own mini-jet, each plane will be unique in its own way even though everyone will start from the same standardized template. For instance, the techniques used to build and assemble the mini-jet, and the approaches to strengthening and balancing the plane will very from person-to-person. Furthermore, additional customizations beyond that of the original design schematic may also be made by the engineer. As such, the combination of all these different factors will result in a wide range of planes, which will all have their own unique advantages and disadvantages. During this learning module, each person is encouraged to test their planes multiple times to see if their plane flies straight, and are encouraged to make slight adjustments to further improve the overall balance and flight performance of their mini-jet models before moving on to the next learning activity.

Part B) Peer Review & Evaluation 《B部分)同行评审和评估》

Now that everyone has completed their own mini-jet model, we will advance to the next stage of the project and begin the process of testing and evaluating each plane. We will start by forming small groups with 2 ~ 3 people in each group. Within these groups we will perform a “peer review & evaluation” to determine which mini-jet model is the best overall plane amongst those made by the group’s individual members. Using “qualitative observations”, the group will evaluate the overall build quality of each plane (i.e., visual assessments of the: the cut quality, general assembly, strength, & aerodynamics, etc.) of the planes that have been created. Basic testing techniques may also be incorporated into the “peer review & evaluation” process as well. This could include testing the planes to see which plane flies the furthest or straightest within a general test. Once each group has completed their peer review, they will need to select the best plane from within the group to advance to the next stage of testing.

Please be advised that we are only looking at making visual “qualitative” observations at this time. We are not performing formal tests to collect numerical “quantitative” data just yet. These formal tests will be completed using the “Scientific Method” in the upcoming learning modules.
