Facilitating Learning Part 1: A Changing Educational Landscape 《促进学习》第 一部分:不断变化的教育环境

With the advent of AI… education is, without a doubt, destined to change!

We are now in the midst of an educational paradigm shift! A shift in educational pedagogy that is so extreme that we have never once in the history of our species experienced such an abrupt change to how we think about education. How will we deal with such a significant change in our society? Moreover, how will we find our way forward?

随着人工智能的出现……毫无疑问,教育注定要发生变化!

我们现在正处于教育范式的转变之中!教育教学法的转变是如此极端,以至于我们人类历史上从未经历过如此突然的教育思维转变。我们将如何应对社会中如此重大的变化?此外,我们该如何找到前进的方向?

While the answer seems insurmountable at first, and it is something that has many educators on edge… I have always found that the answers to our most significant challenges can often be found by better understanding our past. Moreover, while it may seem like AI has changed everything, in many ways, it has not changed anything at all. Therefore, while mainstream education is bound to evolve, you might be surprised to learn that it will most likely shift toward what we have already been recommending educators do for generations.

虽然答案一开始似乎难以克服,也让许多教育工作者惶恐不安……但我始终认为,通过更好地了解我们的过去,往往可以找到应对这些最重大挑战的答案。此外,虽然人工智能似乎已经改变了一切,但在很多方面,它根本没有改变任何东西。因此,虽然主流教育必然会发展,但你可能会惊讶地发现,它很可能会转向我们已经建议教育工作者做了几代人的事情。

Therefore, AI will really force the educational sector to adopt “Best Practices”; however, “Best Practices” are not the same thing as “Common Practices,” and that is where our problem lies. That is why we will see such an abrupt upheaval of the entire education sector. Moreover, the resulting chaos will be felt globally, but some educational frameworks are in for a bigger surprise than others. But let us back up a bit in our story because AI is a new and novel innovation for most people. An innovation that is taking the market by storm and is disrupting the fabric of our very existence.

Now with, students can generate entire essays, reports, or even media content with the push of a button. So, how do we evaluate the quality of student work when we have no way of telling if the student or an AI algorithm made it? Furthermore, that is a severe problem in our current product-driven education model that has been heavily skewed towards summative assessments and standardized tests. 

现在,学生只需按一下按钮,就能生成整篇文章、报告甚至媒体内容。那么,如果我们无法判断是学生还是人工智能算法完成的作品,我们该如何评价学生作品的质量呢?此外,在我们目前以产品为导向的教育模式中,这是一个严重的问题,因为这种模式已经严重偏向于终结性评估和标准化考试。

However, STEM education, the Engineering & Design Process, and the Scientific Method all teach us something different. These methods focus on process and less on the final outcome. We can disprove a hypothesis, which is ok because the real learning can be found in the process and not the final outcome. We are concerned with inquiry and formative practices and less so with the final summative product or outcome. We are more concerned about discovering knowledge than acquiring and retaining facts, and this education model can effectively co-exist with AI. In contrast, the structure of most standardized product-driven curriculums will likely be rendered useless in the new age of AI.

然而,STEM 教育、工程与设计过程以及科学方法都教给我们一些不同的东西。这些方法注重过程,而不是最终结果。我们可以推翻一个假设,这没关系,因为真正的学习可以在过程中找到,而不是最终的结果。我们关注的是探究和形成性实践,而不是最终的总结性产品或结果。我们更关注发现知识,而不是获取和保留事实,这种教育模式可以有效地与人工智能共存。相比之下,大多数以产品为导向的标准化课程结构很可能在人工智能新时代失去作用。

While we already have the tools at our disposal to deal with these issues, it often takes work to visualize how we can put these tools into practice. Therefore, we will talk about different ideas in this series of short articles. Starting with dispelling the myth of what AI is and isn’t, and how we can use sound educational practices such as STEM education and experiential learning to future-proof our educational systems in an age of uncertainty!
