Time Zones 时区

A Time Zone is an area between 2 lines of longitude where the time is the same. Time Zones are used to standardize the time used by locations which are close to each other, so that everyone operates on the same time. This makes it easy for businesses to operate. Just imagine how difficult it would be if every place used a different local time.

Every 24 hours the Earth makes a complete rotation. Since there are 360 degrees of longitude and 24 hours in a day, 24 time zones were created. The basic division for each time zone is 15º of longitude. (360º / 24 = 15 degrees per time zone)

(360º / 24 = 15 degrees per time zone)

The line that we use to base all time zones is called the Prime Meridian.

Not all time zones are as simple as being a consistent measurement of 15º of longitude though. China has only one time zone so that the entire country can operate on the same time. As you look at the Time Zone map you will see many alterations to the time zone.
