Applied Physics in STEM 《STEM

Project Based Learning (PBL) and Inquiry Based Learning (IBL) are essential to STEM education; however, these methodologies are only a means to an end and are not indicative of STEM education as a whole… Which is the real-world application of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics — and this means that we must aim at developing rigorous academic standards while creating authentic learning opportunities that will prepare our students for the new global economy… But that’s easier said than done!

While both the PBL and IBL frameworks have their proponents and critics, a more in-depth analysis will begin to reveal that it isn’t the individual framework that is flawed, but the execution of a particular teaching methodology as a result of poorly designed projects or curricula. Therefore, in this presentation we will look at a single project, something that is very common, and show you how vastly different the final learning outcomes can be. To this end we will explore how to scaffold and guide your students through a process of inquiry to help ensure that your students can move beyond the project and start understanding and applying the rigorous academic concepts that will place math and science into a real-world context — and this is one of the guiding principles that’s at the heart of STEM education.

As such, this presentation will explore how vastly different the final learning outcomes can be when a process of Inquiry Based Learning has been used in both scenarios. Therefore, the entirety of this presentation will focus on conducting an in-depth comparative analysis of this one project as we explore and identify the reasons why there can be such a large discrepancy in the final learning outcomes and attainment…. Discover why one approach to PBL and IBL resulted in questionable learning outcomes while the other did not — and develop a better understanding of how that project was revised to produce the highest standards in teaching and learning possible… And then go on and use that knowledge to make similar revisions to your projects in the future.
